Famitsu has released its videogame sales chart for the week from 1 to 7 January 2024.
The new year started as the old one finished, Momotaro Dentetsu World (SWI) is the top seller game with 99,358 units sold and the runner up is Super Mario Bros. Wonder (SWI) with 95,764 units sold but surprisingly in the third place a comeback: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (SWI) with 30,818 units sold.
The first week of the year usually registers high sales and in the 2024 seems like the trend is not changed, no new entries but another 3 titles returned in the chart: Human: Fall Flat (SWI) with 4,328 units sold at #28, Super Mario Maker 2 (SWI) with 4,283 units sold at #29 and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (SWI) with 4,237 units sold at #30.
The chart is almost completely filled by Switch titles, only Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 represents PlayStation 5 games (and due to the limited time bundle) with Nintendo dominating the chart as usual: 6 titles in the top 10 and 19 titles in the top 30 (including Pokemon games).
Combined sales from the top 10 is 375,329 units which is better than the last week of 2023 while the increase isn’t just due to the first games but 18 titles sold more than 10,000 units, something that recently is not very common to see.
Unlike software, hardware saw a regression from the previous week, Switch OLED sold 73,541 units, PlayStation 5 sold 35,518 units, Switch Lite 18,638 units and Switch 12,372 units, the other systems were below 10,000 units.
Considering that in the incoming weeks these numbers will hugely drop and there are high chances that in the second part of the year Nintendo will release Switch successor, this week could be the last or one of the last where Switch sold more than 100,000 units combined.
